The moment the weather starts to warm up, you probably start daydreaming about hitting up your favorite camping areas in your RV. Heading out to the woods is a relaxing way to spend your vacation time. However, summer camping isn’t without its drawbacks, especially when temperatures are extremely high. That’s why you’ll want to take some steps to beat the heat.

Get Your RV Ready

You’ll want to walk through all the necessary steps to ensure your RV is ready for camping. Inspect for holes in the insulation or frame where hot air can sneak in. Let your air conditioner run for an hour to ensure it’s working properly. Run through your checklist as usual and look for signs that something might need to be repaired before your next trip.

Also, check to make sure your emergency supply kit is ready to go. Your first-aid kit should be filled with all the essentials and fresh supplies, so definitely check for expired products. Make sure there are at least two fire extinguishers in your camper, one outside and one inside.

Keep Yourself Cool

On particularly hot days, your number one priority needs to be keeping everyone cool. Keep all plans confined to the morning and late in the evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Try and keep your skin covered, but wear loose clothes that breathe well. Hats and sunglasses are also highly recommended.

Keep the RV Cool

When your family is indoors, you’ll want to take some steps to keep the RV as cool as possible. This can save you a lot on the energy you would need to run your AC.

The first step in fighting the heat is being smart about how you park your camper. If you can, find a shaded area to protect you from the sun. You’ll also want to park so the side of your RV with the most windows is facing away from direct sunlight. This way, when the weather is very hot, the sun’s rays won’t hit your windows and magnify the problem.

Speaking of the windows, there’s a lot of heat that can leak into your RV via the windows. Try to keep them covered to minimize how much your interior heats up.

Meals

Using some of your kitchen appliances can create unnecessary heat. Be smart about how and when you prepare meals. If possible, stick to cold sandwiches and fire up the grill outside, so all that heat has somewhere else to go.

With the right kind of prep, you’ll be ready to beat the heat and focus on enjoying the summer camping season.
