As the days get warmer and longer, it’s only a matter of time before you set off on your next RV camping adventure. However, you can't just take your camper straight from winter storage and head out. Before you can hit the road, it’s important to ensure that your rig is ready for the journey, which is why you'll need to perform some spring preparation checks. We've created the following RV de-winterization guide to help walk you through the process. If you find that your RV is in need of parts or repairs after a long winter break, get in touch with us at Rte. 125 RV & Marine in Rochester, New Hampshire.

Inspection

The first thing to do when pulling your camper out of storage is to give it a detailed visual check. Open all the doors, windows, and cabinets. You’ll also want to open your awning and look for any functional issues or critter infestations. Another important area you’ll need to check is the slide-outs. Proceed with caution if it feels like it might be stuck. Check under your RV for dark spots or signs of any leaks. Inspect your tires to make sure they have the correct air pressure. Let your rig sit with the windows open for some time to clear any nasty smell that may have built up over the winter. Keeping a can of spray lubricant handy will make it easy to lubricate any locks, hinges, and latches.

Check Appliances and Accessories

Go through all your appliances and accessories and test them to make sure they are functioning properly. Turn on your furnace, refrigerator, and stove. Also, check your smoke alarm and flashlights. Make sure all the batteries have a strong charge and the propane systems are in working order. If you find anything in your propane system that seems suspicious, make sure to take your RV to a technician for an inspection. Don’t risk starting a fire or not having functioning appliances.

Prepare the Plumbing System

Once your inspection is complete, it’s time to move on to taking care of the plumbing systems. You may have filled your water tank and lines with non-toxic antifreeze. If that’s the case, you’ll need to drain it completely, sanitize the whole area, and then flush it out again.
