While leveling your travel trailer is not technically a required step, it can easily make all the difference when it comes to setting up your RV. Spending your whole trip in a trailer that is constantly leaning to one side is not ideal. Unfortunately, not all travel trailers have automatic leveling, and performing it manually can feel both tedious and overcomplicated. Consider some of the ways you can better approach the process, and successfully level a trailer yourself!

Here are a few helpful tips and tricks for manually leveling your travel trailer.

Find Your Location

Choosing the proper location to level your travel trailer is a crucial step in the process. While you may not always have a choice in the matter, when possible, you should always level your travel trailer on flat ground. Additionally, it’s best to level your travel trailer on solid ground rather than loose sand or soft mud. If your trailer sinks into the ground, then the leveling process is made much more difficult and less efficient.

Level from Side to Side

Before you detach your trailer from its tow vehicle, use a level to figure out which side of the trailer will need to be raised and by how much.  Move the whole unit slightly forward, and lift the rig by placing leveling blocks or boards, where the tires are going to rest. Then reverse back and check if the rig is even. Repeat this process over and over, making adjustments until your trailer is level. Finally, you can secure your trailer with chocks and disconnect the tow vehicle!

Stabilize Your Vehicle

Stabilizing your travel trailer will ensure that it stays level, even when you move around inside. Know that most models either have automatic stabilizing jacks or come with a tool to raise and lower them. The jack should be firmly pressed into the ground, without being shoved into the ground itself.

However, keep in mind that using the jacks to stabilize is not recommended. Not only are they likely to break if used in this way, but every little adjustment to one jack will force you to adjust the other jacks as well.
